Ideam alert for frost and dry season in Colombia
VU
Ideam advises communities to be aware of the alerts, protect crops and avoid activities that may cause forest fires.
In Colombia, the dry season is mainly affecting the departments of Boyacá, Cundinamarca and Nariño, where frosts are occurring due to low temperatures and lack of rainfall, according to the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam). These conditions not only affect farmers, whose crops are freezing, but also increase the risk of forest fires in several regions of the country.
Currently, there is an orange alert for low temperatures in 145 municipalities, of which 50 are in Boyacá, 40 in Cundinamarca and 33 in Nariño. On the other hand, 320 municipalities face fire risk, and 152 of them are on red alert, as is the case in Cundinamarca, Meta, Santander and Boyacá.
In coastal areas, Ideam has issued other alerts. In the Caribbean, there is a risk of strong winds and waves, especially in the center and east (orange alert), while in the Pacific there are winds, waves and rains, mainly in the south.
Ideam advises communities to be aware of the alerts, protect crops and avoid activities that may cause forest fires. It also suggests having contingency plans to face this difficult season.
