The recent update of the phytosanitary protocol that allows the air export of grapes to China reinforces Peru's position as the main world exporter of this fruit. This agreement, signed in June during the visit of President Dina Boluarte Zegarra to China, seeks to diversify Peruvian supply and improve grape shipments to China, which until now were mainly carried out by sea.
Air transport will allow the grapes to arrive fresher, obtaining better prices and consolidating Peru in the Chinese market. In 2022, Peru was the second largest supplier of grapes to China, surpassed only by Australia, and was competing with countries such as Chile, South Africa and India.
In addition to grapes, Peru stands out in the export of blueberries, asparagus and quinoa grains. To maintain and increase these exports, access to new markets and the promotion of long-term investments is crucial.
In 2023, Peru consolidated itself as the main global supplier of grapes, followed by the Netherlands, Italy, China and Chile. However, it is still necessary to lift sanitary barriers for grapes in Ecuador and Israel, which would open new opportunities for Peruvian exporters and further strengthen Peru's position in the global market.
