The first results of a culture trial, using the full spectrum LED lighting solutions offered by Fluence by OSRAM, have just demonstrated an 11% higher efficiency compared to the old high-pressure sodium greenhouse luminaires (high-pressure sodium / HPS).
Wageningen University and Research (WUR), in cooperation with Fluence by OSRAM and Vortus, has published the first results of a culture trial analyzing the viability of full spectrum LED lighting solutions, using the Fluence PhysioSpec Greenhouse ™ spectrum, compared to the old high pressure sodium (HPS) greenhouse luminaires. Preliminary data show PhysioSpec greenhouses are up to 11% more efficient than high pressure sodium greenhouses for some tomato cultivars, with the added benefit of being more energy efficient than high pressure sodium fixtures .
"This is a very interesting result for the application of full spectrum LED technology in the production of tomatoes in greenhouses. It shows that even without any other optimization of the environment for LED solutions, LEDs can equal or even surpass old fixtures from commercial producers, "said Haris Ouzounis, horticultural services specialist and senior photobiologist, Fluence by OSRAM.
Cooperation with opinion leaders recognized worldwide is a top priority for Fluence by OSRAM. This first trial with WUR is the first in a series of results that Fluence will publish in the coming months. In addition, Fluence is advancing several other initiatives with research centers, universities and organizations around the world to develop best practices and future applications for the industry.
