Macrotunnels and innovation redefine strawberry production in the Dominican Republic
VU
Innovative farming methods and government support drive growth and export goals in the strawberry sector.
The Dominican Republic is investing in expanding strawberry production, focusing on regions like Jarabacoa, Constanza, Ocoa, Hondo Valle, and Azua, with Jarabacoa standing out for its favorable climate. The government, through the Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA), has introduced a USD 165,400 project featuring 20 Macrotunnels, each covering 12.5 square meters, to protect crops, conserve water, and reduce pest issues.
The initiative was introduced to the Jarabacoa Strawberry Producers Association, comprising over 60 members. Under President Luis Abinader's administration, support for strawberry farmers has increased, including the addition of a refrigerated collection center.
FEDA continues to assist strawberry farmers nationwide and promotes the annual National Strawberry Festival in Constanza, showcasing the growing sector.
