Third year of losses for mango growers in Peru

Lack of water and climatic problems impact growth, quality and profitability of production.
Peruvian mango is going through commercial, climatic and productive problems that complicate its situation. Although it was expected that this season would improve after previous climatic difficulties, the reality has been different.
Ángel Gamarra, president of Promango, explained that, despite having a good climate for flowering and fruit set, now the water crisis affects the growth of the fruit. This has resulted in smaller mangoes, early maturity and prices that do not cover production costs. This is the third year in a row of losses for small producers, something never seen before, said Gamarra.
In Piura, there is an estimated 40% reduction in production due to premature ripening, which makes many fruits unsuitable for export. The situation is worrisome, as there is not enough water in the reservoirs nor a clear date for the next irrigation.
According to Gamarra, this lack of water could not only affect current production, but also lead to the loss of young trees and, eventually, older ones. In addition, groundwater is diminishing, complicating the use of wells for irrigation.
Although the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation activated Catastrophic Insurance, Gamarra pointed out that economic support is insufficient and many producers feel abandoned.
