Industry representatives seek to improve national competitiveness.
Potato imports into Spain have grown significantly in recent years, especially from Egypt, whose presence in the market has increased significantly. According to local data, imports from Egypt increased from 2,463 tons in 2019 to 50,488 tons in 2023, representing an increase of 1,958%. In value, these imports grew from €1.1 million to €24.9 million, an increase of 2,100%.
Until September 2024, Spain has imported a total of 885,783 tons of potatoes, 21.7% more than in the same period last year and 42% above the average of the last five years. France remains the main supplier, with 620,942 tons (70% of the total), followed by Portugal and Egypt, which contributed 61,081 tons (7% of the total).
In the context of the European Union, Egypt consolidates its position as the main supplier of potatoes for the 27 member states, representing 68% of total purchases. While imports from Egypt have increased by 91.4% compared to the average, those from Israel and the United Kingdom have decreased.
Sector experts highlight three main challenges for the potato industry: the inclusion of the crop in CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) interventions to strengthen competitiveness through the creation of producer organizations and operational programs; the need to develop alternative phytosanitary solutions before banning current products; and the shortage of seed potatoes due to pests and adverse weather conditions, which has reduced the volume available and increased costs.
