The Netherlands is its first supplier with €5.26 billion of fresh fruit and vegetables, Spain the second with €4.82 billion, it is the first supplier of lettuce, cabbage, cucumber, citrus, melon, watermelon and stone fruit.
Germany imported 9.3 million tons of fruit and vegetables in 2023 worth €14.846 billion in 2023, with the Netherlands being its first supplier with 3 million tons and €5.265 billion, Spain second with 2.7 million tons and €4.816 billion and Italy third with 982,248 tons and €1.556 billion. Although Germany imported more fruit and vegetables to the Netherlands in global terms, there are products in which Spain is the first supplier of this market, according to Eurostat and FEPEX data. These products are lettuce, cabbage and cucumber in vegetables and citrus, melon, watermelon and stone fruit in fruits.
Spain leads in the supply of lettuce, cucumbers, citrus, melons and stone fruits.
Almazon imports of lettuce in 2023 amounted to 247,415 tons, of which 130,716 tons came from Spain, 44,722 tons from Italy and 35,638 tons from the Netherlands. Cabbage imports amounted to 229,324 tons, of which 75,559 tons came from Spain, 63,811 tons from Italy and 50,523 tons from the Netherlands. In the case of cucumber, Germany imported 601,838 tons, of which 269,031 tons came from Spain and 223,031 tons from the Netherlands. In fruit, Spain is the main supplier of the German market for citrus fruits, with 760,354 tons of the million tons imported by Germany in 2023; melon and watermelon with 285,948 tons, of the 612,278 tons imported by Germany and stone fruit (peach, nectarine, cherry...), with 240,704 tons, of the 384,720 tons imported.
The Netherlands leads with potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, onions, pineapples and grapes.
It is Germany's largest supplier in absolute terms, a large part being re-exports of produce from other parts of the world. It is Germany's main supplier of potatoes, with 246,598 tons out of a total of 534,237 tons. It is also the main supplier of tomatoes, with 341,418 tons, followed by Spain, from which a total of 155,216 tons were imported. Germany's total tomato imports in 2023 amounted to 698,253 tons. The Netherlands is also the main supplier of carrots, with 165,166 tons, onions, with 146,266 tons. In fruits, it is the main supplier of banana, with 503,585 tons, out of a total of 1.3 million tons, pineapple, with 319,169 tons out of 455,486 total tons and grapes, with 175,998 tons out of a total of 422,198 tons.
