"covered" cherries are a good size and harvested at maturity.
For the first time in the Vaucluse, a producer has adopted a covered orchard.
Last year, the Experimental Area of the Tapy AOP Cherries from France organised a demonstration by Voen of a roofing systems adapted to cherry orchards.
This year, a producer of the Vaucluse, Florent Lazarus installed the system on a one hectare plot, which is especially windy. The special technique is that of a classic
net and pieces of canvas are sewn and arranged like tiles to stop wind. Cherries also protected from the cold, rain and hail. By adding closes openings, insects are also kept out.
This ultra-protection has a cost of about € 40,000 per hectare and also taks time to install: 250 hours. The assembly is done after flowering to allow optimum pollination.
