Onion production will increase

After a shortage which had resulted price of onion at dizzying heights, the planned production is increasing.
India has three seasons for onion: Kharif (winter), late kharif and rabi (summer). Harvesting of rabi onion take place from mid-March until July and represents 60% of onion production in the country.
According to the Ministery, crop condition is very good and the harvest has begun in key producing states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
Farmers expect a production increase of 10% to reach 8 million tons, against 7.3 Mt for the same period last year.
The country's total production is estimated at about 13 million tons for the 2010-2011 year, against 12.1 million tons last year, according to data from the National Horticulture Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF).
