Decrease in cultivated area but rise in production volume

In 2021, the area planted with table grapes in Peru contracted by -2.5% compared to 2020, totaling 20.220 hectares, according to the president of the consulting firm Inform@cción, Fernando Cillóniz Benavides.
Despite this, the production volume increases considerably, due to the substitution of traditional varieties for those with higher production yields, better prices and quality.
Based on 2021 data, Ica has the largest table grape area in Peru, reaching 9.448 ha compared to 9.618 ha in 2020, followed by Piura with 7.472 ha (7.548 ha). The two regions represent 74% of the total table grape area in the country.
Other producing regions: Lambayeque with 1.503 ha in 2021 compared to 1.565 ha in 2020, La Libertad 1.196 ha (1.173 ha), Arequipa 400 ha (478 ha), Áncash 116 ha (334 ha), Lima 71 ha (18 ha), Moquegua 10 ha (did not certify areas in the previous year).
In terms of varieties, Red Globe leads the ranking with 4.495 hectares (5.244 ha in 2020), representing 47.6 percent of the total. Cilloniz highlighted that after being the dominant variety 5 years ago, today it has been reducing its participation.
Other varieties: Sweet Globe with 3.330 ha (2.850 ha), Crimson Seedless with 1.406 ha (1.974 ha), Allison 1.322 ha (1.065 ha), Autumn Crisp 1.261 ha (658 ha), Superior Seedless 1.077 ha (1.492 ha), Sweet Celebration 1.021 ha (1.130 ha), Timpson 802 ha (626 ha), Jacks Salute 765 ha (718 ha), and others 4.736 ha (4.987 ha).
As the new varieties are replacing the Red Globe, supplies to the Chinese market, which fancies that variety the most, have been reduced. Instead, with the new varieties, Peru looks to markets such as Europe and the United States.
