Annual pineapple production in Mexico grew by 16.2% in 2020

In 2020, Mexico produced one million 209 thousand tons of pineapple, this figure represents an increase of 16.2% compared to the previous year, according to the The Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico.

Pineapple was the fruit that grew the most in the Mexican sector in 2021. In addition, raspberries grew by 13.8%, totaling 147 thousand tons; and peaches, which increased by 9.1%, with a total of 173 thousand tons, according to the Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP).

Pineapple production has been growing in the country. In 2017 they achieved 945 thousand tons; in 2018 it totaled one million tons, and in 2019 it reached one million 041 thousand 161 tons, reports the SIAP.

Today, Mexico is the ninth largest producer of this fruit in the world. The cultivated Mexican surface represents 1.9% of the world area destined for cultivation.

The fruit is grown throughout the year, being June and August peaking months, with 33.7% of the total national production of the fruit (350 thousand tons approximately).

The main producing areas are Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Jalisco, and Nayarit.

The main destination for pineapple is the United States, with a value of about 30 million 602 thousand dollars.

Other recipients are Canada, South Korea, Japan, Russia, Italy, France, Panama, Spain, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates.

The annual pineapple consumption per capita in Mexico is 7.7 kilos. Its participation in the national production of fruits is 4.4%.
