Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, carries out a survey of Belgian household spending every two years. The last survey, conducted among 6,000 households, concerns the year 2020 and many changes have been noted compared to the previous study.
In 2020, Belgian households spent 15.9% of their budget on food products and non-alcoholic drinks (14% in 2018). Food products and non-alcoholic drinks are the second most important item of expenditure, after housing. According to Stabel, Belgian household spending increased by + 26% for vegetables and + 10% for fruit.
During the health crisis and the various confinements imposed, Belgians cooked more, which led to an increase in their expenditure on food products. Logically, spending in the HoReCa sector has decreased, by around a third according to the study which specifies that the average annual amount per household was 2,350 euros in 2018 but only 1,560 euros in 2020.
