Export certification and improved planting materials were among the priorities discussed at Pagsibol 2026.
The Philippines is looking to improve the export potential of high-value vegetables through better planting materials, phytosanitary compliance and production technologies.
These priorities were discussed during the fourth session of Pagsibol 2026, organised by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) earlier this month.
Meeting export requirements
Joan-May R. Tolentino, chief of BPI's National Plant Quarantine Services Division, outlined the requirements producers must meet to enter international markets. These include pest risk assessments, phytosanitary certification, food safety standards, maximum residue limits and logistics.
The session also examined tissue culture and mutation breeding as ways to develop healthier planting materials with improved yields, disease resistance and tolerance to environmental stress.
Dominic A. Galimba, a plant tissue culture specialist, explained how these techniques could support the production of higher-quality crops.
