Revised rules could introduce different fruit movement requirements depending on regional phytosanitary risks.
Argentina is reviewing its national Huanglongbing (HLB) prevention programme to update phytosanitary controls and adapt requirements to regional disease risks.
On October 14, the National Food Safety and Quality Service (SENASA) presented proposed regulatory changes to citrus industry representatives, researchers and provincial authorities.
New approach to disease control
The proposal would consolidate seven existing regulations concerning HLB and its insect vector, Diaphorina citri, into a single framework.
It would also introduce regional classifications based on disease presence and vector distribution, with corresponding requirements for transporting citrus fruit and planting material.
Contingency procedures for new HLB detections are also under review.
Industry consultation
The discussions involved the Argentine Citrus Federation (Federcitrus), the Entre Ríos Citrus Federation (FECIER), the Northwest Phytosanitary Association (AFINOA) and other industry representatives.
Provincial authorities will submit further proposals before the updated regulations are finalised.
The changes aim to maintain disease prevention while adapting phytosanitary measures to production and trade conditions.
