Increase in volume and value for imports of fresh fruit and vegetables

Spain is one of the largest import producers and exporters of fresh fruit and vegetables but its imports continue to grow (Photo: agronewscastillayleon.com).
Spain records for the first half of 2020 an increase in its imports of fresh fruit and vegetables. Increase in volume (+ 4.83%) and value (+ 8.92%).
According to data processed by FEPEX, imports of fresh fruit and vegetables in the first half of 2020 increased. Totaling in volume 1,772,594 tons and in value 1,677 million euros, that is to say compared to the same period of 2019 increases of + 4.83% and + 8.92% respectively.
Fruit imports amounted to 1,186 million euros, with a growth of 16.10%, highlighting a very strong increase in citrus fruits, in particular orange with 560% for a total of 34 million euros , lemon with 174% for a total of 26 million euros, mandarin with 68% totaling about 15 million euros. Imports of blueberries also increased strongly with an increase of 41%, which represented around 121 million euros.
Vegetable imports totaled 823,623 tonnes, a volume similar to that of the first half of 2019. The value reached 490 million euros, or -5%. This drop in value is mainly due to a drop in potato imports, which suffered a 14% drop to 160 million euros compared to 188 million euros last year. Note also the increase in tomato imports (+ 12.6%) for a total of 74 million euros, garlic (+ 36%) which reached 4 million euros, lettuce (+7, 2%) which totaled more than 10 million euros, pumpkin (+ 61%) for 10.5 million euros or zucchini (+ 7%) which totaled 9.7 million euros.
