Spain is the world's leading exporter of fruit and vegetables and one of the biggest producers as well.
This much is confirmed by the figures furnished by the Spanish Federation of Fruit, Vegetable, Flower and Live Plant Producing Exporters (FEPEX), the co-organiser of FRUIT ATRACTION, the Fruit & Vegetables Trade Show, alongside IFEMA. This new event took place between 4th and 6th November at Feria de Madrid.
During the year 2007, Spain sold a total of 9.5 million tons of fruit and vegetable products abroad, based on a value figure of 7,686 million euros. With regard to the breakdown according to products, figures furnished by the Customs Department and processed by FEPEX, show that the largest vegetable exports during this period consisted of tomatoes (891,130 tons), lettuces (518,185 tons), cucumbers (436,843 tons), peppers (368,751 tons) and cabbages (311,256 tons).
As far as fruits are concerned, we might highlight the following exports: citric fruits (3.78 million tons), stone fruits (603,081 tons), melons (378,915 tons), water-melons (306,093 tons) and strawberries (197,454 tons).
The main destinations for Spanish exports were Germany (2.1 million euros), France (1.8 million euros), the United Kingdom (1.2 million euros) and the Netherlands (918,811 euros).
