Supplier from Egypt seeks to increase its presence in the European markets
Gadco Egypt is a family business founded in 1987 by Ibrahim Gad, who still takes over the company. Its main activity is export of fresh fruits and vegetables from Egypt: “From oranges, mandarines, lemons, grapes, and mangoes, to garlic and onions”, says Mr. Gad.
Gadco Egypt’s market destinations for grapes are mainly African countries. They started exporting grapes to South Africa and Kenya in 1997, where now they have been present for almost 25 years.
Kenya’s Mombasa sea port is the Eastern Gate of Africa for Gadco Egypt, and from there to some landlocked countries without maritime ports like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tchad, Niger, and Democratic Republic of Congo.
“We used to export to West African countries like Gabon, Cameron, Benin, Ivory Coast, and so on, however, longer transit time started to be a barrier for the fresh produce. Today, we also export citrus and grapes to Mauritius and Reunion Islands in the Indian ocean.”, says Amira Gad, Export Manager at Gadco Egypt.
“We supply fresh green cut garlic to Italy for already 25 years. In addition to citrus, we supply high volumes of garlic to Australia and Taiwan, the countries where our purple garlic gained popularity, although shipping charges have increased dramatically over the last couple of years, due to interruption in sea shipping following the COVID-19 crises, the increase that may persist at least throughout 2022, if not to 2023 onward.”, says Mohamad Gad,
“We are also launching our line of peeled and minced garlic and looking forward to increasing our sales in the European markets, to which sea transportation is carried out through many shipping lines with a short transit time.”, comments Ibrahim Gad.
