Europe is one of the largest and most dynamic markets for avocados. This is the 2nd largest market for this fruit but European consumption could still increase and reach similar demand than in the United States in the next 8 years.
At a meeting in Malaga (Spain) Xavier Equihua, president of WAO (World Avocado Organization) said that imports of avocados in Europe will exceed 750,000 tons this year. Europe is the world's second largest market for this fruit, behind the United States, which has imported 1,100,000 tonnes of avocados in 2018. If the increase in world production continues at the current rate, in 8 years the consumption in Europe will reach that of the United States.
According to WAO, Spain, although an avocado-producing country, has a per capita consumption of only 1.2 kg (8 avocados per year weighing about 150 g each). This is a lower quantity than that recorded by France (1.8 kilos) which imported 122 million kilos in 2017. In order to promote consumption in Spain, the WAO plans to invest half a million euros this year in different campaigns from June.
The WAO is made up of producers from the main avocado producing countries, including Peru, South Africa, Mexico and the United States.
