Tomato campaign, Spain protects its rear
Spain

The Spanish tomato has had a bad start to the New Year. It is all the fault of mass tomato importation from Morocco, in higher quantities than those set in the tariff quota in this period and at a lower entrance price than established in agreements between the European Union and Morocco.
The result is a sharp drop in prices paid to Spanish producers. The monitoring of the correct application of the preferential system has been widely criticised, however there is great concern for what effects a constant increase of Moroccan production and export will have on the sector over a short period of time.
