Russia has encouraged its domestic production, which has made good progress, notably with new greenhouses and new orchards.
Since the food embargo, Russia has encouraged domestic production to replace imports, and this substitution is cost-effective.
The Minister of Agriculture estimated that the country had saved 4 billion USD by replacing imported products with domestic products. The embargo began in 2014 but since then Russian production of meat, dairy products, fruit and vegetables has increased considerably.
Notably with new greenhouses and new orchards. Approximately 450 acres (182 hectares) of new greenhouses were completed last year, and another 400 greenhouses covering 4,900 acres (1,982 hectares) are planned for the next 5 years. Production of greenhouse vegetables totaled about 800 000 tonnes and could reach 1.8 million tonnes within 3-4 years.
As regards fruit production, the planting of orchards has progressed well, mainly in apples. Professionals believe that this is a more profitable production than cereal production and are now worried about possible cancellation of the embargo.
