Florida knew a winter with temperatures never seen before which caused the loss of about 80 % of the cultures of tomatoes.
The Florida Tomato Committee, a tomato marketing organization, estimates that 80 percent of the state’s winter crop was wiped out by freezing temperatures that lasted several weeks.
Florida is the nation’s largest producer of fresh tomatoes.
Destructive winter and a cold spring have caused a shortage of fresh tomatoes in all the United States, with an important rise in prices in spite of shippings coming from other countries.
The Florida Tomato Committee, a tomato marketing organization, announces that Florida tomatoes are back.
However the production is still late compared with last year; only 52 % of the volumes were produced during the same time. But production is going to rise in power according to the weeks.
The quality is excellent and the flavor is absolutely phenomenal – best in years,” said Reggie Brown, manager of the Florida Tomato Committee.
