Panama will soon be declared as the country free from Mediterranean Fruit Fly
Panama
Monday 21 May 2007
The opportunity of profitable export of fresh fruit and vegetables in the international market with possible high currency revenues and further improvement of social and economic conditions of living of producers from Azuero and Veraguas regions, contributed to declare these areas as free from Mediterranean fruit fly.
With investment of about 76.845 EUR, Ministry of Agroalimentary Development (MIDA) together with Department of Agriculture of United States and Agency of Technic Cooperation from Taiwan exercise permanent monitoring to declare these regions of Panama as free from this insect.
This declaration is especially important for growers and traders of melon, watermelon and cabbage who plan to export their fresh produce to China and Taiwan. These far east markets are considered as target export markets for fruit and vegetables originating from Panama apart from traditionally important American market.
