The demand for "healthy" products and the vogue of "vegan" allow legumes to experience a renaissance. Among these legumes, chickpeas that owe their popularity to hummus. The first harvest of chickpeas in the United Kingdom has just been made in Norfolk.
This first harvest of chickpeas in the United Kingdom will reach 20 tons. The chickpeas will be dried and packaged by Hodmedod's, the specialist in Suffolk legumes, and will be marketed in mid-September.
Hodmedod's launched the UK's first commercial lentil crops two years ago, and last year the first chia seeds grown in the UK.
Chickpea occupies a prominent place in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine and is a basic ingredient in hummus. Increasingly popular in the United Kingdom, hummus would be present in the fridge of 41% of people, almost 2 times more than in any other country. But it is usually imported from Asian countries. In 2017, India produced 67% of the world total.
