In Poland, according to the latest estimates, potato production will be 11% lower than last year despite an increase in area.
According to IERIGZ (Instytut Ekonomiki Rolnictwa and Gospodarki Zywnosciowej) the area of potatoes increased this year by 4% totaling 310 000 hectares. Despite this increase in area, the harvest is estimated at about 6.7 million tonnes. This is a decrease of 11% compared to the previous year.
This decline in volumes can be explained by significantly lower yields, a consequence of the drought recorded in several regions. Most potatoes have smaller sizes.
With a lower national supply in volume, industry professionals expect an increase in imports, especially from the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain and France.
