The area of the Szydlów Commune comprises 1000 ha of orchards, of which 80% are plums orchards. Over 10% of total plums production in Poland comes from Szydlów orchards (app. 20 thousand tons). Favorable climate and soil conditions, together with high standards of orchard management, make the fruit from Szydlów highly popular and sought at food and agricultural fairs organized in central and southern Poland.
The orchard managers offer mainly dessert plums, and strains to be used in the food processing industry. The spectrum of dessert plums ranges from the earliest strains, such as Ruth Gerstetter, Herman, Cacanska Rana, to the late strains: Bluefre, President, and the very valued strain, Ordinary plum. Dessert plums comprise a considerable share of the production.
Large amounts of plums useful in the food processing industry, such as Lowicka plum, Dabrowicka plum and Stanley plum, are grown as well. The offer also includes significant amounts of export-type apples as well as pears and cherries. The fruit is stored in a constantly-growing number of refrigerators. The storage capacity after springtime investments has reached almost 3.5 thousand tons.
