The country has good potential for apple production

Increasing domestic production would limit apple imports.

The Institute of Agricultural Research of Ethiopia estimates that the country has great potential for apple production. With its varied climates and areas at various altitudes , Ethiopia has a good ability to produce high quality apples.

Currently being tested in parts of the country, the new apple orchards are promising. Varieties adapted to local conditions , appropriate working methods would provide significant production and could increase producer incomes.

Ethiopia imports more than 354,000 tons of juice and nearly 15 varieties of apples.
