Potatoes and bananas are the most imported products by Ireland

CSO (Central Statistics Office) has published figures for the food trade. Ireland imported 7.7 billion euros in 2017, an increase of nearly 500 million euros compared to 2016 and 1.5 billion euros compared to 2012.

 

 

 

According to this CSO survey, Ireland in 2017 imported 93 000 tonnes of bananas and 62 000 tonnes of apples. More than 70% of banana imports came from Costa Rica (39 000 tonnes) and Belize (27 000 tonnes). Third in the ranking of imports, oranges and mandarins reached in volume more than 48 000 tons. The main import partners were South Africa (9,700 tonnes), Spain (7,800 tonnes), Peru (5,100 tonnes), Morocco and Egypt (4,500 tonnes each).

 

 

 

In the case of vegetables, Ireland imported 72 000 tonnes of potatoes, 47 000 tonnes of onions, 29 000 tonnes of tomatoes, 23 000 tonnes of cabbage and 15 000 tonnes of lettuce. The total value of these imports was 175 million euros.
