Beginning of lemons exports
MD
The region of Tucumán in Argentina is the largest producer of lemons in the country, and 2nd largest exporter behind Spain.
Heavy rains in January and February (some areas received 800 mm of precipitation), have almost flooded orchards and will disrupt the harvest by the impossible entry of vehicles in certain fields.
The harvest of 35,000 hectares has just begun.
The forecasts predict a better performance and a 25% increase of the production this year which should reach 1.2 million tons. The export rate is forecast at 30% of total production and income to about U.S. $ 250 million in 2011.
Exports are expected to begin by the end of March, bound for two major customers: Russia and Europe.
