Only 10 new fruits were granted permission to enter the Chinese market in 2020. Avocados from the Dominican Republic is one of them.
In 2020 the General Administration of Customs of China granted import permits for 10 new fruits, a lower number than the previous year. Due to the difficulties associated with the pandemic, the number of approvals decreased as well as the volume of imported fruit.
The fruits authorized in 2020 to enter the Chinese market are citrus fruits from Argentina and Chile, melons from Brazil, mangoes from Cambodia, avocados from the Dominican Republic, dragon fruit from Indonesia, avocados as well as blueberries and nectarines from the United States, blueberries from Zambia.
Between January and October 2020, according to Chinese customs data, imports of fresh fruits, dried fruits and nuts reached 5.51 million tons, a decrease of 10.5% compared to the same period of last year.
The Dominican Republic produces nearly 400,000 tonnes of avocados, or about 8% of world production estimated at 4.7 million tonnes. The country ranks 12th among global exporters and ships avocados to 34 countries including the United States, Spain, France, Holland, Great Britain and Italy.
