Imports of fresh fruit and vegetables in Spain reached a value of 4,060 million euros up to November 2023, showing an increase of 19% compared to the same period of the previous year. Of this total, 2,664 million euros came from third countries, representing an increase of 13% and comprising 66% of the total.
According to data from the Customs and Excise Department, Morocco continues to be the main country of origin of Spanish imports, representing 20% of the total and 30% of purchases outside the EU, with a value of 794 million euros up to November 2023.
After Morocco, Peru is positioned as the second supplier of third countries, with 440 million euros, an increase of 13%, followed by Costa Rica with 235 million euros (+17%).
EU imports during the period analysed amounted to 1,395 million euros (+34% compared to the same period the previous year). France leads as the main EU supplier, with 397 million euros and a growth of 22%, followed by Portugal, with 331.5 million euros (+24%).
In terms of volume, Spanish imports of fresh fruit and vegetables from January to November 2023 totalled 3.7 million tonnes, an increase of 8%. Of these, 2 million tonnes came from non-EU countries (+5%) and 1.7 million tonnes from the EU (+10%).
