Jamaica’s agriculture sector on the rise

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of Jamaica reports a 17.4% growth of the agri sector in the third quarter of the year, from July to September.
According to the Portfolio Minister, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., thanks to the farmers’ performance, the increase is being observed for 6 consecutive quarters since the second quarter of 2021. The minister added that the third quarter reflects one of the best-performing quarters on record.
The subsector’s gross output for the third quarter of the ongoing year totals 214,599.2 tons, compared to 182,750 tons achieved in the same term of 2021.
In the analyzed lapse of 2022, all major crop groups demonstrated an increase. The highest increases performed plantains (+21.9%), fruits (+20.8%), yams (+19.1%), vegetables (+18.5%), and condiments (+16.9%).
