In Canada, a large investment is planned to help the potato sector. Support food self-sufficiency but also diversify crops, increase production, help open new markets.
The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador to invest CAD 2.75 million ($ 2.03 million) in land development to increase large-scale potato production. The investment is part of the announced CAD 13 million ($ 9.6 million) plan to create jobs in the sector and help farmers.
The plan aims to support employment in rural communities and help open up new markets. In 2019, according to Statistics Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador seeded 325 acres (131.5 hectares) of potatoes.
The neighboring provinces, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick sowed 1,600 and 16,400 acres respectively (647.4 hectares and 6,636.8 hectares) in 2019. Prince Edward Island, known as the 1st province producing potatoes in Canada, seeded 85,500 acres (34,560 hectares) in 2019.
