Increased banana imports in Canary Islands

In 2021, banana imports in Spain significantly inreased. According to Customs data, fruit imports from Central America grew by 15%, and those from Africa by 27%.

 

According to the Canary Islands Banana Producers Association (Asprocan), the tariff reduction program for foreign suppliers started in 2010 has made competition unstoppable.

 

At the same time, from the Association of Farmers and Ranchers of the Canary Islands (Asaga) they explain this phenomenon by the low production of bananas and their high price.

 

In 2021, banana production in the Canary Islands was affected by the eruption of the La Palma volcano, whose flows caused the disappearance of plantations. Another factor that the crop faces this year is unfavorable weather conditions, according to the Association.

 

In Asaga they do not know when production will recover. They ask public institutions to adapt aid to the banana sector to these realities, especially that of the island of La Palma, so that the farmers obtain compensation or support in recovering their farms. In addition, they ask that the aid for bananas be adjusted to the CPI. The sector is facing constant price increases in transport, electricity and inputs.
