Production is down and imports of mandarins and oranges will increase

In Japan, the area planted with mandarins is down, with 51,700 hectares for the 2020/21 campaign and only 49,300 hectares for the 2022/23 campaign.
According to a recent GAIN report from the FAS service of USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture, Japanese mandarin production in the 2022/23 marketing year is expected to reach 921,000 tons, down 3.5% from in the 2021/22 campaign.
During this 2022/23 campaign, Japanese mandarin imports should increase by +11.2% and reach 16,000 tonnes (14,379 tonnes during the previous campaign).
Japanese orange production should record a decline of around -2% compared to the previous campaign and reach 5,600 tonnes.
During this 2022/23 campaign, Japanese orange imports should increase by approximately +11.1% and reach 80,000 tonnes.
In terms of orange imports in the 2021/22 marketing year, Australia was Japan's 1st supplier with 37,018 tons (51.4%) ahead of the United States with 29,030 tons ( 40.3%). Another supplier, Turkey with 3,991 tons and whose volume should continue to grow according to some Japanese importers who are looking for cheaper alternatives.
