Heavy rains destroy crops in southern India.
Heavy rains have damaged crops across several districts of Karnataka, India, prompting the state government to order a joint survey by the Agriculture and Revenue departments. Farmers will receive compensation under National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) guidelines once the survey is completed.
Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy said the government is committed to providing relief and highlighted that crop insurance claims will also be processed quickly to reduce distress. He added that farmer participation in insurance schemes has risen from 16 lakh to 27 lakh (from 1.6 million to 2.7 million) since the current government took office, ensuring broader protection during calamities.
Reports indicate that districts such as Belagavi, Vijayapura, and Kalaburagi have faced significant flooding, leaving fields waterlogged and crops destroyed. Last year alone, farmers in Kalaburagi received about ₹660 crore (approx. US$75.4 million) in insurance settlements, with half of the payments already disbursed. The minister assured that remaining claims and restoration funds will be released soon.
