PotatoEurope 2025: harvesting field ready for action
PE | DLG Benelux
In just over a week, the important international potato event PotatoEurope 2025 will start in Lelystad, the Netherlands.
The preparations are in full swing: the tents are being erected, the paths have been laid and the 25-hectare building field is in perfect shape, ready to be dug up during the event. Trial harvesting of Alegria variety was recently carried out by Jacob de Jong, manager at WUR, Field Crops, in Lelystad. The results are promising, with a substantial yield of 60 tonnes per hectare. The size distribution is also satisfactory. The majority of the harvest consists of coarse tubers, with 34.9% in the 65-70 mm size and 26.2% in the above 70 mm size. This means that expectations for the demonstrations are high.
From field to sorting
During PotatoEurope, harvesters from the brands Agri-Poppe, AVR, Dewulf, Grimme and Ropa harvest the table potatoes. These are then transported by tipping trailers from Beco, Brettmeister, Joskin, Van Ginkel Machines and Krampe to the storage lines, where machines from AVR, Bijlsma Hercules, Dewulf, Grimme, Spinnekop and Visser take care of the storage process. The box filling demonstrations also traditionally attract a lot of attention. This year, AVR, Dewulf, Grimme, Mechatec, VHM Machinery and Wevano Machinery, among others, will show their latest filling systems. A striking novelty is the live demonstration of optical sorters, with which Flikweert Vision, MecSistem, TechNature, Tomra Food, Visar Sorting and Wevano Machinery visualize the quality of the harvested potatoes.
Trial fields full of innovation
In addition to the harvesting field, various trial fields have been set up, where visitors can become acquainted with current themes in potato cultivation: variety research, fertilization, crop protection and innovations in sustainable cultivation methods. PotatoEurope thus offers a complete picture of the developments in the potato chain. The more than 300 exhibitors can expect an international audience, shares organizer Kuno Jacobs of DLG-Benelux. "At the moment, potato professionals from 119 countries have already secured an entrance ticket," he says with satisfaction.
