Chilean blueberries arrive in China
MD
After two years of negotiations, Chile is the first country to be able to export its blueberries to China.
The association of exporters of fruits (ASOEX) highlights the benefits of this opening for the entire sector. An important step in the diversification of exports of blueberries, the opening of China will strengthen the position of Chile as the leading exporter of blueberries in the southern hemisphere.
During the 2010-2011 season, Chile exported 69,800 tons of fresh blueberries, an increase of 40% over the previous season. Volume sent to Asia accounted for only 3% of total exports. For 2014-2015 volume should reach about 110,000 tons.
Fruit consumption in China has increased, driven by the westernization of diet and the popularity of products with high health connotation, such as blueberries. In 2010, the total area of blueberry production in China was 3,000 hectares and total production reached 5,000 tons.
