Mexico's berry sector is facing difficulties and exports are expected to fall by 18-20%, according to Juan José Flores García, general director of Aneberries.
This decline is due to various factors, including climate change, drought, aggressive pests, exchange rate fluctuations, lack of skilled labour, rising costs and economic slowdown in the main markets.
Flores García pointed out that, although growers are highly technical and water-efficient, berry varieties are not adapted to the extreme heat and drought conditions that affect much of the country.
Among the berries, blueberries are the most affected, especially in Jalisco and Sinaloa. Competition from Peru and Chile has coincided with production peaks in Mexico, affecting prices.
