Japan sees firmer February prices for several staple crops
VU
Cold, dry conditions since January have delayed crop growth in several regions.
Japan’s agriculture ministry expects vegetable prices to remain broadly stable in February, although several staple crops are forecast to trade above seasonal averages on tighter supply.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), potatoes and onions are likely to stay firm due to reduced shipments linked to last summer’s heat and drought in key producing areas. Carrots and taro are also projected to see slightly lower availability, supporting higher price levels.
Most other vegetables — including Chinese cabbage, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, eggplants, tomatoes, and green peppers — are expected to move close to seasonal norms in both supply and pricing.
Cold temperatures and limited rainfall since January have slowed crop development in some regions, creating temporary supply fluctuations, though overall market availability is forecast to remain balanced.
