Peruvian company will launch 3 new blueberry varieties in 2022

6 years ago, Hortifrut Peru began to develop new blueberry varieties. Rafael Quevedo Sturla, the director of the company, announced that in 2022 they plan to launch 3 new varieties.
He pointed out that not only the Peruvian blueberry sector needs to diversify the offer, but also the international one, given that the berry is gaining more and more popularity in the markets.
According to Quevedo, the company has 1,800 hectares planted with blueberries in the Chao valley (La Libertad), and has more than 16 varieties of this crop.
Fernando Méndez, the general manager of Hortifrut Peru, highlighted that the "Divine" variety, developed by the company in 2020, does not require cold and stands out for its firmness, size, sweetness, low acidity and productivity.
Hortifrut is the world's leading producer and exporter of blueberries, with more than 30 distribution centers in the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Asia and Europe.
In addition, it is in alliance with more than 400 blueberry producers in seven countries, has more than 500 clients and is present in 37 countries.
In Peru, Hortifrut has 4 hectares dedicated for testing, it has 2 nurseries in Chao with a consolidated capacity of 6.5 million plants. The genetic area has 200 crosses, 40.000 germinated seeds, 20.000 tested plants and 1.000 fruits.
