The European Commission has started an impact assessment of the European school scheme which distributes fresh fruit and vegetables to schoolchildren.
The conference "A European curriculum adapted to the future" organized by the European Commission allowed various speakers, including Philippe Binard, the General Delegate of Freshfel Europe, to take the floor.
Philippe Binard underlined the relevance of the program from a health and nutritional point of view. The cost of impacts due to unhealthy diets is at least double the value of the food market. He said that almost 17 million children have access to the school curriculum which is endowed with an EU budget of EUR 130 million, sometimes supplemented by additional resources from national budgets. The EU budget allows for the annual distribution of approximately 70,000 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables each school term.
He also detailed certain recommendations, in particular the necessary diversity of the products distributed as well as the usefulness of disseminating information on production methods and origins. In order to ensure an effective and educational distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables to European schoolchildren
The impact evaluation of the program will continue over the next few months and Freshfel Europe will continue its advocacy with decision-makers to ensure that the priorities and recommendations are taken into account.
