Italy
Thursday 18 September 2008
According to the latest data released by the national statistics institute ISTAT, prices of agrofood products have increased by 6.3% in August. Today the food shopping (exceeding 470 euros) corresponds to 18.8% of the overall monthly purchases.
Commenting the above, the farmers’ confederation CIA highlights that 6 Italians families out of ten have been forced to change their habits by reducing consumptions and renouncing to quality products.
In the period January-July 2008 fruit consumptions decreased the most in Italy: -4%. Also vegetables registered a critical drop by 1.5%, as well as olive oil (-2.7%).
CIA reports that, in July alone, consumptions of agrofood products decreased by 2.5% compared to the previous month. Fruit is again the most penalized segment dropping by 3.5%. Vegetables’ consumptions were down 1.6%.
CIA’s proposal to solve the crisis is favouring consumers’ information through a “double label” showing the price at origin and at retail. Furthermore, to contribute to the transparency of prices CIA considers fundamental the creation of a regional Price Observatory.
