Rice Price Increase
Egypt
Tuesday 08 April 2008
Rice price has increased by 50% since last January, as Egypt, which is the first rice producer in the Near East, decided to stop rice exports from April to October. Vietnam and India had already taken such measures, which reduced worldwide rice production by 1/3 and increased prices.
The rice price has a negative impact on developing countries, such as Bangladesh, Cameroon or India, and many countries now fear that the crisis leads to riots, as rice is the primary food for many people.
