In September 2022, the Ecuadorian company Hortifrut exported a shipment of five tons of blueberries by sea to the Netherlands, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG).
It is a shipment with which the country begins its race to enter the international blueberry market, they comment from the Ministry.
Blueberry cultivation in Ecuador began in 2015, and currently, 23 partners make up the Ecuadorian Federation of Blueberry Producers and Exporters (Fepexa), and approximately 50 hectares are dedicated to cultivation in Imbabura, Carchi, Pichincha, Tungurahua, Cotopaxi, Azuay and Loja; and in El Oro, Santa Elena, and Manabí tests and trials are carried out with different varieties.
The main destinations for Ecuadorian blueberries are Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.
Ecuador has high potential to become an agro-export investment destination, thanks to its fertile land, favorable climate and geographical position, and availability of qualified labor, says Patricio Almeida, executive director of the Phytosanitary and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control Agency (Agroquality).
