According to a study compiled by Coldiretti, 2022 is the hottest year ever in Italy. Rainfall is down 45%. Drought impacts the quantity and quality of harvests
According to Coldiretti (Confederazione Nazionale Coltivatori Diretti), for the 1st half of 2022, Italy recorded a temperature 0.76°C higher than the average and for the month of June alone, a temperature higher by +2.88°C on average. The year 2022 is the hottest year ever in Italy where this rise in temperature has been accompanied by a 45% drop in precipitation.
This climatic upheaval weighs on crops. The drought has already caused damage for more than 3 billion EUR in the countryside, caused disasters in the environment (fires, melting glaciers) and has a negative impact on agricultural yields.
However, Italy receives around 300 billion cubic meters of rain each year, but only 11% of this volume of water is retained. Also, according to Coldiretti, it is necessary to organize to collect rainwater and make it available in difficult times. Coldiretti advocates measures for the maintenance, saving, recovery and recycling of water with infrastructure works, the creation of basins and the reinforcement of the network of reservoirs.
“Farmers have already pledged to do their part to promote the rational use of water, the development of low-impact irrigation systems and innovation with less water-demanding crops. Water is essential. Without water, food production and the competitiveness of the entire food sector are at risk,” said Ettore Prandini, President of Coldiretti.
