The CPA wants to increase tolls in July 2012, against its promise not to change anything before the end of the canal's expansion.
New tariffs for ships going through the Panama canal have been set by Autoridad del Canal de Panama (ACP) and will be effective July 1, 2012. This new tolls compose of 11 categories by size of boat, against 8 before, with an average increase of 15%.
This rate change is highly criticised by the International Chamber of Shipping (
ICS) which deems them excessive. The CNS is asking the CPA to reconsider, noting the promise not to raise rates before the end of the expansion of the canal, or in 2014.
Last year, the Panama Canal recorded the passage of 14,684 vessels, resulting in $1.7 billion for the CPA.
