Domestic purchases of organic products in the first nine months of 2007 grew by 9.7% compared with the same period of the previous year. This is what the Italian farmers association CIA announced on the basis of Ismea / AcNielsen data. Meat as well as products for children registered the highest increase, respectively by 43% and 36%. Even sales of fresh and processed fruit and vegetables grew strongly by +25%. The Ismea / AcNielsen data detect a clear division between North and Central-South.
The northern regions have a strong growth (+18% Northwest and +15.3% Northeast) while in central regions there is a decline by 8, 5% and in the south by -4.3%. CIA’s association for organic sector Anabio stated that the data confirmed the continuous development in this area, despite the difficulties faced by producers and agri-food consumption decline registered in recent months. It is proof that bio products are breaching among Italians who prefer them to the traditional ones.
At the same time, farmers who choose this particular and natural type of cultivation and breeding are increasing. The agricultural organization added that the number of operators grew by 2.4% overcoming the 51,000 units quota, including 45,089 producers, 4,734 transformer manufacturers and 194 importers. Their distribution in the national territory sees Sicily and Calabria between the regions with greater presence of organic farms.
