India stopped its onion exports a few weeks ago, without any prior information, which causes supply difficulties in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is heavily dependent on India for onions.
India banned the export of onions after excessive rains damaged crops in September. Bangladeshi Trade Minister Tipu Munshi urged the Indian government to lift the ban on exporting onions to neighboring countries.
Bangladesh lacks 6 lakh tons (600,000 tons) of onions a year, India provides 80% of this volume missing. With the sudden cessation of Indian onion exports, Bangladesh now imports from Turkey, Myanmar and Egypt to meet its needs but at a much higher cost.
