Mexico: world leader in tomato exports

Printable version
Mexico solidified its position as the world leader in tomato exports, reaching a customs value of $2.988 billion, a historic record according to data from the Ministry of Economy.

With this figure, Mexico surpassed the Netherlands, which recorded $1.950 billion, and Spain, with $1.269 billion.

According to Trade Data Monitor, the main destination for Mexican tomatoes is the United States, which absorbs 99.8% of exports, followed by Canada and Japan.

The Mexican Department of Agriculture forecasts a production of 3.30 million tons of tomatoes in 2024, a 2% increase compared to 2023, driven by the growing demand for exports.

In 2023, production decreased by 8% compared to the previous year, reaching 3.22 million tons due to the drought that affected water access.

Despite these challenges, the tomato sector in Mexico remains robust, with Sinaloa leading production, contributing 22% of the national total.

The top five tomato-producing states account for more than 51% of the total production: Sinaloa (22%), San Luis Potosí (13%), Michoacán (7%), and Baja California Sur, Jalisco, and Sonora (5% each).

Since Mexico surpassed the Netherlands in 2016 as the world's leading tomato exporter, it has maintained this position for eight consecutive years.
