The Mediterranean diet, is more fruits and vegetables !
FJ
Italians eat fewer Fruits & Vegetables and experts warn of the decline that absolutely must be stopped.
Currently every Italian eats 303 gr / day on average Fruits & Vegetables, against 361 g / day in 2000. This is now a public health problem, according to experts. Returning to the previous consumption would avoid 52,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease each year and savings in health costs amounted to € 3.4 billion for the next 8 years.
By adding 200 g / day of Fruits & Vegetables in their diet, the Italian could live better and longer, reducing at least 1.5 billion health spending per year. If the Italians exceeded the threshold of 500 g / day of Fruits & Vegetables, savings in health costs could reach € 8.9 billion.
Without a strong investment in major campaigns for the population, the trend so far could lead consumption to only 277 g / day in 2022. That would mean the end of the benefits of the Mediterranean diet in Italy.
